Gladis Udora Bryant Porter, of Salem, VA, was promoted to glory on Friday, April 19, 2013 at the age of 82. She was a soldier of The Salvation Army Corps of Roanoke, VA. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas Warren Porter; mother, Maggie Elizabeth Bryant; and father, Henry Jacob Bryant. She was a very unique person, and cherished her own family as well as her family at The Salvation Army very much. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Linda, Michael, James, Wayne, David, and Edgar; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Porter; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for their excellent care and thoughtful acts. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel with Captains Ken and Amy Argot officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial gift to Good Samaritan Hospice at 2840 Electric Road in Roanoke, VA 24018 or to the Salvation Army at 724 Dale Avenue, SE in Roanoke, VA 24013.
