Gilda B. Funderburke, 83, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. She was born on December 14, 1928, in Asheboro, NC, to the late Nolan and Dorothy Burrow.
She is survived by her son, Rick Funderburke and his wife Carol; her daughter, Kimberly F. Woolwine and her husband Samuel E. Jr.; seven grandchildren, Rhett Funderburke, Kari Fitzgerald and her husband Mark, Samuel "Ross" Funderburke, Kate Funderburke, Whitney Woolwine, Samuel "Trey" Woolwine and his wife Elizabeth, and Casey Woolwine; two great-grandchildren, Dash and Story Fitzgerald, and her brother, Robert Burrows and his wife Jeanne and their family.
Gilda will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a good friend, and a devoted servant of God. She faithfully attended Salem Baptist Church for many years, serving as a deacon, an active member of the BALL group, a member of various leadership committees, and a member of Girls of Grace Sunday School class. She was an avid card player and excelled at bridge. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. The family expresses their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the ER and CCU of Lewis-Gale Hospital for their loving care. Gilda was grateful for the special friendships of Betty Jean Harris and Pam Setser.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 15, 2012 at John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Salem Baptist Church with burial immediately following at Sherwood Memorial Park. The Reverend Everett Kier will officiate. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3959 Electric Road, Suite 357, Roanoke, VA 24018.
