Gertrude Bailey Slate

Gertrude Bailey Slate 82 of Salem, left this earth to reside in her heavenly home. She was born in Fagg, VA, a daughter of the late Frank J. Bud Bailey and Allie Woods Bailey and had been an area resident all of her life. She was a member of Faith Wesleyan Church, where she served as the official taster of the home made apple butter made at the church. She spent her adult life as a loving wife, mother, and grand mother. She enjoyed Gospel Music and reading, but her love was her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter T. Slate, Sr., a son, James Frump Slate, daughter, Pamela Lafon, and a brother, Minor J. Bailey. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda J. Slate; two sons, Roger D. Slate and his wife Teresa, and Tommy Slate and his wife Selena; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and her brother, Robert L. Bobby Bailey. Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Friday, August 24, 2012 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Rogers will officiate. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM, Thursday at the funeral home.
