George W. Walters, 87, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2013. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army and later retired as a grader with Harris Hardwood after 40 years. His church membership was held at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren and he enjoyed woodworking in his spare time. Preceding him in death were his parents as well as all of his siblings. His surviving family includes his wife of 67 years, Clara Mills Walters; son, Glenn Mills and wife, Dora; step-grandchildren, Diane Dean, Jackie Harless, Linda Basham, and Lisa Sowers; sister-in-law, Ruby Conner; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. A two-hour period of visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 beginning at 5 p.m. and will immediately be followed by a funeral service at 7 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A graveside service will then be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jack Lowe and the Rev. Pete Bain will officiate.
