George Straley Tate, Jr., 92, of Salem, peacefully passed away at home on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. George was born December 4, 1924, in Norton, Va., the only child of George and Sallie Tate. He was raised in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia. He graduated from Norton High School and the United States Naval Academy. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Dental School. He practiced dentistry for 12 years in Salem before completing a graduate program in orthodontics at MCV. Afterwards, he returned to Salem and established his orthodontic practice. George was active in the Salem Sports Foundation, the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and most significantly the First United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Roanoke Valley Dental Society, the Virginia Association of Orthodontists, and the MCV Orthodontic Foundation. He was a modest man of faith who influenced many. George is survived by his wife, best friend, and soulmate of 67 years, Mary Ann Horne Tate. Also surviving are his children, Robert Tate and wife, Catherine, Richard Tate and wife, Susan, and Lynne LaPierre and husband, Bruce; grandchildren, Sarah Lewis and husband, Bryan, Andrew Tate, Kelly Rutledge and husband, Adam, Carter Tate and wife, Dima, Nicole Teichman and husband, Joseph, Reid LaPierre, and Taylor Tate; great-grandchildren, William Lewis, Rebecca Lewis, Payton Tate, Brady Tate, Riggins Rutledge, Tate Rutledge, Rider Teichman, and Harper Rutledge. The family gives heartfelt thanks to their special friends and devoted caregivers for sharing continual love and support. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2017, at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Salem. A celebration of his life will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at FUMC. There will be a private family graveside service.
