George White Snead, of Salem, was born at home on December 12, 1923 in Shawsville, Virginia, and died on April 10, 2017. George was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Ann Andrews Snead. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Lin Snead Melchionna and her husband, Olin R. Melchionna, Jr.; two granddaughters, Ann Andrews Melchionna, and The Rev. Elizabeth Marie Melchionna and her husband, William S. Roberts, and their children, Liam K. Roberts and Edward George Melchionna Roberts. The son of Samuel Colston Snead and Bess White Snead, George was raised on the White family ancestral farm, Glen Auban. During World War II, while in the Corp of Cadets at VPI, George volunteered in the US Army for three years, earning three bronze stars for the invasions of Eniwetok (Marshall Islands), Guam and Okinawa. Following his military service, George completed his education at Virginia Tech. George worked as President of Snead Lumber Company, Vice President of First National Exchange Bank/Dominion Bank and Associate Administrator of Lewis-Gale Clinic. Georges zeal for life was expressed in his service to his community, particularly St. Pauls Episcopal Church, which he joined in 1950. He was a dedicated, life-long member of the parish serving as youth leader, vestry member, junior and senior warden, and trustee. He also served as a Boy Scout leader and was a long-time member of the Virginia Tech German Club. George was a great outdoorsman and shared his love of fly-fishing by teaching many to fish. He attributes a long life to doing something for someone else every day. George cultivated an intergenerational circle of friends, and his family is deeply grateful for the ways in which these friends cared for him daily. A funeral service will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal in Salem, Virginia on Wednesday, April 19 at 11:00 a.m.. A reception for friends and family will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Pauls Episcopal Church Permanent Endowment Fund, 42 East Main St., Salem, VA 24153-3809.
