George Joseph Lucas

Dr. George Joseph Lucas, 84, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2014. Dr. Lucas was an Eagle Scout and was commissioned in the US Air Force. He completed both his undergraduate and medical degrees with Georgetown University and went on to spend 32 years in federal service. He was also a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church for 38 years. Preceding him in death was his wife, Margaret E. Lucas. His surviving family includes his children, George M. Lucas, Rosemary Van Brunt and husband, Michael, and Brian Lucas and wife, Pat; grandchildren, Kathleen Van Brunt, Meghan Van Brunt, Rachel Lucas, and Leah Lucas; sister, Lois Durwin; niece, Sharon Durwin; and friend and caregiver, Edith Spangler. The family expresses a very special thanks to the Virginia Veterans Care Center and the Lewis-Gale Medical Center for their wonderful care. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke. The service of interment will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Noon at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association at 4504 Starkey Road in Roanoke, VA 24018 or the Roanoke Valley SPCA at 1340 Baldwin Avenue, NE in Roanoke, VA 24012.
