George S. Jenkins, Sr., Salem, VA, formerly of Joppa, MD, left his earthly home to be with the Lord on December 4, 2012. George is the son of the late Solomon and Elizabeth Jenkins and was born on May 23, 1917 in Minersville, PA. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Irvin Jenkins and son Barry Lee Jenkins. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Miriam Thompson Jenkins; son G. Scott Jenkins, Jr. and wife Carol of Xenia, OH; daughter Sandra Jenkins Gibson and husband David of Roanoke, VA; son Gary L. Jenkins of Pemberton, NJ; sister Ellen Jenkins of Palo Alto, CA; grandchildren Angela (Gabi) Gibson, James Jenkins, Joy Breuninger, Rachael Liberty, Joshua Meyer, Andrew Meyer; great-grandchildren William Breuninger, Sarah Breuninger, Adam Jenkins, Matt Jenkins and Emma Jenkins and a sixth great-grandchild due in December; beloved family friends Wayne and Joan Douglas and the Rev. Dr. Daris Bultena of Joppa, MD. George enlisted in the US Army in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater and served in HQ Command throughout WWII. After his discharge George continued his service to the government as a civilian employee for 33 years working at Indian Town Gap, Olmstead AFB, Wright Patterson AFB, and Andrews AFB. Upon retirement in 1986 he and his wife continued to reside in Joppa, MD and enjoyed traveling and camping along the East Coast. A Freemason, George was a life member of Cressona Masonic Lodge #222 in Cressona, PA and was a life member and served as Grand Tall Cedar of Har-Ce-Forest #142 Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He was also a member of American Legion Post #0297. A member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, George was a member of the church choir and Chanticleers and provided thousands of volunteer hours in service to his church and to God. Private services will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church for the Childrens Center or Chancel Singers, 622 Joppa Farm Road, Joppatowne, MD 21085.
