It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Junior Huffman Sr. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the age of 77.
George was born on August 9, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia, and was the son of Leonard D. Huffman and Elizabeth Pauline (Fink) Huffman, as well as Hayden and Louise Niday. He grew up alongside his siblings, Carolyn Niday, Sissy Niday, Danny Niday, Robert Niday, Gene Niday, and Gary Wayne Niday.
On August 29, 1992, George married Beatrice Cole Huffman, and together they raised a loving family, including their three children: William Eric Cole and wife, Jennifer, Ricky Huffman, and Joseph Benjamin Huffman and wife, Leslie Anne.
George was also the proud father of George F. Overstreet and his wife, Tammy, and Thelma G. Overstreet. With his first wife, Ada B. Overstreet, he was the father of Pamela D. Collins and her husband, Mike, George J. Huffman II and his wife, Cristy T., Leonard D. Huffman (Jake) and his wife, Julie, and Nancy E. Adams and her husband, Terry Adams.
A devoted grandfather, George, leaves behind 15 grandchildren: Shawn Overstreet and wife Rachel Blaine, Tia Faith Huffman, Joseph Benjamin Huffman II, Raina Nunes, Shane Huffman, Peyton Fields, Caleb Fields, Jason Hall and wife, Brandy, Zachary Hall, Christopher Huffman, Justin Dear-Huffman and his wife, Ashton, Kimberly Portillo, and Alexis Huffman and her husband, Jonathan Goens, George D. Adams and his wife Shayne Adams, Mercedes Knotts and her husband David Knotts; and 19 great-grandchildren: Bailey Christine Overstreet, Jensen and Jared Hall, June O. Dear Huffman, Ozzie B. Dear Huffman, Emma Huffman, Matteo Portillo, Camilla Portillo, Anthony Portillo, Bella Portillo, Alex Portillo, Maria Portillo, Elvis Oswald, Willow Goens, Corwin Goens, Baylin Adams, Jackson Adams, Isabell, and Clara Knotts.
George was also a brother-in-law to Theresa Cole-Smith and Marie Elana Cole.
Throughout his life, George worked as a truck and delivery driver for RC Cola, where he was a proud member of the RC Wrecking Crew. Later, he also worked for Old Virginia Brick in Salem, Virginia.
Known to his family and friends as "Duck," George was a free spirit with a deep love for life. He had an unwavering willingness to help those he cared about. He deeply loved his mother Elizabeth Knapp and Aunt Maude Merrix. George took care of Maude during her final years at his home in New Castle, Virginia. George had a passion for the National Rifle Association and a particular fondness for classic cars, especially his beloved 1966 Pontiac GTO, which he acquired in the early 1970s and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his spouse, children, grandchildren, and numerous friends and relatives.
Family and friends may gather for a period of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Virginia. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, also in the chapel. He will be laid to rest at Sherwood Memorial Park immediately following the service.
