George A. Gearhart, age 94. Of Salem, Virginia, passed away on June 4, 2026. Mr. Gearhart was a lifelong resident of Salem and a respected member of his community.
Mr. Gearhart was preceded in death by his beloved wife, India Rebecca Gearhart, and by his parents, Frank J. Gearhart and Ethel W. Gearhart. He is survived by his sons, D. Keith Gearhart and wife, Cheryl and Paige A. Gearhart, and by his grandsons, Lane (Andrea) and Grant, all of whom cherish his memory and legacy.
Mr. Gearhart was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Gearhart served his county with honor and dedication. He continued his education at Roanoke College, where he earned his degree and ran on the track team as a member of the "Bast Boys". He later earned his master's degree at Virginia Tech, reflecting his strong commitment to academic excellence. He devoted his professional life to education in Roanoke County. Over the course of his career, he served as principal of Clearbrook Elementary, Conehurst Elementary and Burlington Elementary schools. His contributions to education left a lasting and meaningful impact on his community.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his devoted caregivers, Melissa, Brittany, Tabitha and Linda, for their compassionate care and support.
The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Attendees are welcome to process with the family to Sherwood Memorial Park where a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m.

Mr. Gearhart will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his service to his country and his enduring contributions to education and the Salem Community.
