Gene D. "Jay" Helms

Gene D. “Jay” Helms, 62 of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 15, 2025.

Jay was born on October 2, 1963, in Roanoke, son of the late Douglas N. and Ima Jean Jones Helms. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and was most recently an independent residential and commercial contractor within the community. As an avid football fan, Jay loved his Oakland / Las Vegas Raiders and rarely missed a game. He enjoyed playing golf and was a car enthusiast. He faithfully read his bible and remained close to the Lord throughout his life.

In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas N. Helms, Jr.

Family remaining to cherish his memory include his sons, Nick Helms, of Roanoke, and Ben Helms (Gabbi), of Vinton; sister, Lynn Dryer; and his grandson, Mateo Helms.

In keeping with Jay’s and the wishes of the family, all services will be private.
