Gary R. Stovall, 75, of Salem, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Monday, August 6, 2018.
He was born in Princeton, WV, a son of the late Charles and Nellie Moore Stovall and had been an area resident for most of his life. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and National Business College, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi. Gary proudly served in the US Navy and then began working for General Electric, retiring following a 33 year career. He was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, was active with the Boy Scouts of America and the Salem Sports Foundation, loved Salem High School Sports and was a staunch supporter of all UVA sports programs. Most of all, Gary loved spending time with his family and most especially, his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Karen Saunders Stovall; his children, Shanda Johnson and husband Matt, Kevin Stovall and wife Erma, Heather Weaver and husband Wilson; seven granddaughters, Mikayla Stovall, Sierra Stovall, Emma Johnson, Chloe Weaver, Katie Johnson, Kiley Weaver and Maddie Johnson; his brother, Lowell Woody Stovall and wife Annie, and two nieces and a nephew.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, August 9, 2018 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Salem Presbyterian Church.
