Freddie Edward Scaggs, 85, of Salem, passed away on Friday May 16, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Troutville, VA. A son to the late Oakley and Grace Scaggs. After high school Freddie attended barber school where he learned his craft. Freddie proudly went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. He was known to be a hard worker, down to earth honest man who would always help others. He was a life member of the Boy Scouts and an usher as well as a member of Salem Baptist Church. Freddie enjoyed the summer vacations at the beach, taking walks, and reading, he loved to give out candy. Freddie owned and operated Scaggs Barber Shop in Salem, for many years, he loved cutting hair and talking to his clients. Along with his parents Freddie was preceded in death by, two sisters; Joyce Crawford and Connie Ruth Scaggs. Left behind to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 61 years, Lena Inez Scaggs; Daughter, Nancy Scaggs Canfield; two sons, Douglas Edward Scaggs and wife Jill, John Mark Scaggs; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: two brothers, Vivian "Zeke" Scaggs and Rudolph Justin Scaggs; two sisters, Marlies Brantley and Carol Faye Waddell. The family will receive friends on Monday May 19, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A funeral service to honor the life of Freddie Edward Scaggs will take place on Tuesday May 20, 2014 at 2 PM in the chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Everett Kier, officiating. Interment will follow the service at Cedar Lawn Burial Park, Roanoke. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Road N.W.
