Frank Sparky Lane, 93, of Salem, passed away Monday April 11, 2016. He was born in Roanoke, a son of the late Oliver Guthrie Lane and Carrie Watkins Lane and had been a Salem area resident most of his life. He proudly served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and survived the bombings at Pearl Harbor. Following the war, he and his brother Bob established and ran the Brooks Club and then the L & L Pizza Co. before beginning a career in sales. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings. His greatest love in life was his family, often claiming that he was the luckiest guy in the world to have such a close family. His other passions were attending the numerous Salem sporting events in which his great-grandchildren participated in, and, playing golf. He enjoyed many years golfing at Blue Hills Golf Club and won the Ole Monterey Club Championship at age 59. Three weeks ago he shot 10 strokes below his age at Hanging Rock Golf Club. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marguerite Maggie Lane; their three children, Francis Van Lane, Jr., Diane Hammersley and husband Charlie, and David Lane. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Lesley H. Owen and husband Chad, Charlie Hammersley, Jr. and wife Paige, Angel Lane and husband Mike, as well as nine great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Sparky was one of a kind and will live in our hearts forever. His kind spirit and zest for life were an inspiration for us and he set an example of what the best husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather could ever be. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the chapel John M. Oakey & Son, Salem with a celebration of his life beginning at 4PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Tee Program 425 South Legacy Trail St. Augustine, FL 32092.
