Frances L. (Peggy) Hurt, 91, of Salem, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, July 30, 2015. She was born on January 22, 1924 to the late William Wallace and Carrie Pinkard Hurt in Roanoke County, Va.
Peggy grew up on a tomato farm during the great depression years learning the value of hard work and an appreciation for the little things in life. Following high school graduation, she entered the U.S. Navy, proudly serving during WWII. She carried her dedication and work ethic on to college, after taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, earning a B.S. in chemistry from Roanoke College and a Masters Degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia. She spent the next 30 years at Andrew Lewis in Salem proudly educating children her knowledge of chemistry prior to retiring.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William (Bill) Wallace, Jr.
Family remaining to cherish her memory includes her brothers, Harold Hurt, Richard Hurt (Marie), and Robert Hurt (Jill); sisters, Nancy Mowles and Eva Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 3, 2015 from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park with Chaplain Karen Cassell officiating.
