Frances Spradlin Crosswhite, 92, a longtime resident of Salem, VA, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Munner, as she was fondly called, was born on March 30, 1922 in Christiansburg, VA to Samuel and Nellie Johnson Spradlin. She moved to Salem with her family when she was 6 years old. She graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1939 and married James Elmo Crosswhite and raised their two children. After her husband passed away in 1959, she went to work for Stuart McGuire, later to Pool Equipment Company, and then finally to the City of Salem in Parks and Recreation Department before going to the City Managers Office as a Secretary to City Manager William J. Paxton, Jr. and later to Randolph M. Smith. She truly enjoyed her position with the City before she retired with nearly 20 years of service. In retirement she enjoyed quilting, knitting, making sour dough rolls, bird watching, collecting bird houses, and going on many trips with her daughter and friends. She truly enjoyed her time with her family. She was loved by many and will be missed tremendously. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and her sisters, Katherine Spradlin Fairley and Margaret Spradlin. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Sylvia Spradlin of New Smyrna Beach, FL; her daughter, Beth Staton; her son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Becky Crosswhite of Salem; her grandchildren, Kimball, Bradley, Robert, Elizabeth, James, Renee, and Nicole; her great-grandchildren, Jami, Shannon, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Ryan, and Jacey; her great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Calley, and Kori; and a host of nieces and nephews.
