Frances Louise Combs 89, of Salem, left this home to join her husband James Thomas Combs Jr. in their heavenly home, on Sunday May 12, 2013. She was born in Bluefield W.VA. To the late William Eldridge Long and Alice Land Boyd, She and her husband moved to the Salem area to raise their five children, Frances was a member of Salem Baptist Church and she worked for 20 years at General Electric. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, and reading, and making her world famous biscuits, but her love was her family, the grandchildren and great grandchildren, the little ones ranked at the top. Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by, a son, James Alton Combs, a daughter, Belva Jeanne Matherly, and a brother Charles Long. Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Stephen Combs and his wife Stephanie; Charles Combs; and a daughter, Chandra Combs; five grandchildren, Melinda Collins; Keith Matherly; Melissa Wray; Shannon Marsh; and Kimberly Sowers; along with eleven great grandchildren, and a host of other family members. The family will receive friends on Wednesday May 15, 2013 from 4-7 PM at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, and a funeral service to honor the life of Frances Louise Combs; will take place on Thursday May 16, 2013 at 1 PM at Salem Baptist Church.
