Floyd R. Tompkins, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012. He was born in Reading, PA, a son of the late Aulan P. Tompkins and Marguerite Merkel Tompkins. He graduated from Penn State University in 1957 and served three years in the US Army as a traffic analyst at the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Md. He spent 30 years as a Personnel Officer at various VA Regional Offices and VA Medical Centers in West Virginia, Ohio, New York, Maine and Washington, D.C. prior to retiring. His most rewarding work experience came after his retirement from the VA, working at Richfield Retirement Center for over twenty years, where he truly loved the staff and residents. He is survived by his most beloved wife, Wanda Mae Tompkins; two sons, John Tompkins and his wife Cindy, and Randy Tompkins; a daughter, Khris Browne and her husband Tim; four step-sons, Ronnie Woods, Robert Woods, Ricky Woods and his wife Deborah and Donnie Woods, 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Thursday, July 19, 2012 at the Chapel of Richfield Retirement Center. Chaplain Tom Clay will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park where military graveside rites will be afforded by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team and the DAV. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
