With deep love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Evelyn Loretta Wyrick Thompson, on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the age of 96.
Mom was born on Sunday, November 3, 1929, in Marion, Va., to the late W. French Wyrick and Grace Virginia Wyrick. She spent her early years in Marion, where she built the foundation of a life defined by kindness, warmth, and devotion to others.
She attended Marion College and began her career with the Marion Telephone Company. Later in life, she worked with Sears Telecatalog and AARP Pharmacy, where she was known for her dedication and warm, friendly nature. She was also a devoted stay-at-home mother for many years, caring for her family with unwavering love and commitment.
She was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church for over 64 years.
In 1952, Mom married the love of her life, Donald L. Thompson, who preceded her in death. Together, they made their home in Marion, Va. In 1960, they moved to Salem, where she continued to create a welcoming home filled with love and care for her family, friends, and neighbors.
She was an amazing mother-always leading by example, offering encouragement, and providing steady guidance with love and grace. Her love and dedication to her family was unmatched. She dearly loved her family, and they meant everything to her.
She was blessed with three children, Dr. Donald W. Thompson and his wife, Carla, of Birmingham, Ala., Donna T. Link and her husband, Wes, of Christiansburg, Va., and Brian V. Thompson and his wife, Kim, of Roanoke, Va. Her daughter, Donna, devoted many years to Mom's care and considered it a true honor to serve as her primary caregiver.
Mom was a loving grandmother to three grandchildren, Ryan Thompson, Jacob Thompson, and Josh Link; and a proud great-grandmother to Paisley. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Libby Andrews and Ella "Tiny" Wilson, with whom she shared a close and special bond.
Mom was dearly loved and cherished by all who knew her. She also had a very special love for her precious dog, Remington, whom she lovingly called "Rennie."
She was always there for her friends and neighbors, offering kindness and support. She was truly sweet and precious in every sense, someone who made everyone feel valued and at ease. Deeply loved by all who knew her, she had a gentle spirit and a generous heart that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Her life was a beautiful reflection of love, compassion, and quiet strength. Mom will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by those fortunate enough to have known her.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel located at 305 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, Va. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the Central United Methodist Church located at 428 South College Avenue in Salem, Va. Family members and friends may visit once again one hour prior to the service. Interment will immediately follow the church service at Sherwood Memorial Park, also in Salem. The Rev. Bryan Buckles will officiate.
