Evelyn Lowry Layman

Evelyn Lowry Layman, 103, of Salem, VA completed lifes journey on Saturday evening July 11, 2015 at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem, VA. Evelyn was born in 1911 in Ballard, WV and lived her early life in Talcott, WV. She later moved to Waynesboro, VA where she met her husband and love of her life Pat Layman. They were married in 1940 and later moved to Martinsville, VA. In 1955 Evelyn and Pat moved to Roanoke, VA. She worked in the cafeteria at Southview Elementary School for many years until her retirement. Evelyn was a devoted wife, loving mother, and matriarch of the Lowry family. She was predeceased in death by her father and mother, William Darlington (W.D.) and Myrtle McCormick Lowry of Talcott, WV; her loving husband, Clarence Patrick (Pat) Layman of Roanoke; six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her loving son C. P. Layman, Jr. of Salem; two grandchildren, Leisa Layman Mundy and Ginger Layman Rose (James) of Roanoke; two great-grandchildren Jayce Brandon Taylor and Harley Amber Rose, all of Roanoke. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and other family members from both the Lowry and Layman families. She was a member of Villa Heights Baptist Church since 1955. Her family and friends were her life. The family would like to thank her special friend Gail Bushnell for her friendship over the years; Dr. Apollo Leong, who was Evelyns family doctor for many years, and the Staff of Snyder Nursing Home who provided excellent care in her final days. Services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, 305 Roanoke Boulevard, Salem, VA. Interment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro, VA. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 pm and 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday July 14, 2015 at the funeral home.
