Esther Dowdy Creger, 78, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 24, 2010. She was retired from Suntrust Bank, formerly known as Colonial American. She enjoyed traveling and loved her grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, William Louis and Effie Cummings Dowdy; brother, Elbert Dowdy; and brother-in-law, F. Lee Rettinger. Her surviving family includes her son, Darin Creger and wife, Carolyn; grandchildren, Katelyn and William Creger; sister, Lois Rettinger; sister-in-law, Audra Clevenger and husband, Jerry; mother-in-law, Nellie Creger; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Raleigh Court Heath and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care. A period of visitation will be held on Monday, December 27, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the funeral homes chapel. The Rev. Jerry Clevenger will officiate. A eulogy in honor of Ms. Cregers life will be presented by her nephew, Larry Dowdy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Esthers name to the Green Ridge Baptist Church Missions Fund at 5521 Green Ridge Road in Roanoke, Virginia 24019.
