Essie Bartel Long, 84, of Salem, passed away quietly at her home with her boys by her side and other family members on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Essie was preceded in her passing by her parents, W. Lawrence and Laura Bartel of Floyd; husband , the love of her life, Marion Doc Long; and her special friend and daughter-in-law, Carol Bett Long. Left to cherish her memory are her boys, Geary Long of Floyd and Tim Long of Salem; twin sister, Tressie Thornton and husband, James, of Floyd; sister, Freeda Sowers of Floyd; sister-in-law, Thelma Long of Roanoke; grandchildren, Mary Shaver and husband, Richard, of Christiansburg, Jonathan Long of Floyd, Megan Long of Salem, and Laura Long of Herndon; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Landon Shaver; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Essie was a sixty plus year member of the West Salem Church of Christ, where she had many friendships that she valued deeply. She was a long time employee of the Maid Bess Corp., but her final years were spent as a caregiver, first to her mother, then her husband, and finally her daughter-in-law. Essie, while not a gourmet cook always had everyone wanting to eat her meals, simple country food prepared with her flair, but more importantly her love of watching others enjoy her meals. She was always the last to eat, making sure that everyone else got all they wanted. It was said Essies table was the quietest table, as no one wanted to talk, just enjoy her home cooked food and not waste any time by talking. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Sarah Banks, Nae Banks, Julie Martin, Sydney Richie, and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice, because their dedication allowed Mom to be in her home, eating good food at her kitchen table. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any of the following organizations that were important to Essie: The American Cancer Society, Alzheimers Association, Salem Church of Christ, or Good Samaritan Hospice. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1.p.m on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Salem Church of Christ. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Eric Evans officiating. A committal will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.First Visitation
