Ernest Hersel Hancock, 96, of Salem, VA passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016. He was born May 25, 1919 in Patrick County, VA a son of the late William and Nannie Adams Hancock. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Pencie Hancock; and sisters, Myrtle Plybon and Lillian Garst. Mr. Hancock was a member of House of Prayer in Roanoke and Blackberry Baptist Church in Bassett, VA, a US Army Veteran and retired from Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD as a model carpenter. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy May Gordon Hancock; children, Bonnie Buckner and Freddie Hancock and wife, Dee; step-children, Patricia Holdren, Arnetta Allen, Linda Butcher, Chuck Ferguson, Tony Ferguson, Albert Riffe and Becky King; siblings, Edward Hancock, Elsie Wright and Thelma Plaster; grandchildren, Deanna Buckner, Mike Hancock, and Bryan Hancock; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem with Rev. Gary Butcher officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Roanoke. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.First Visitation
