Ernest (Ernie) V. Hammersley, 74, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 17, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He proudly served 3 years in the National Guard, retired from Home Shopping after 17 years of service, and was an avid lover of Spartan and Hokie football. Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Hammersley; and a sister, Virginia Shadlock. His surviving family includes his wife of 16 years, Ruby Hammersley; son, Ernest V. Hammersley, Jr. of Texas; stepchildren, Bonnie M. Worley and husband, Jonny, of Vinton, Peggy M. Fagg and husband, Steven, of Roanoke, Donna M. Sakiey and husband, James, of Salem, and Richard M. Manning of Salem; stepgrandchildren, Christy Fagg, Stephanie Crawford and husband, Brandon, and Jacob Sakiey; siblings, Frank (Peanut) Hammersley, Jr. and Maxine Jones; football buddy, Charlie Hammersley; and many other family members. A period of visitation will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A cryptside service will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Rev. David McNeese will officiate. Online condolences may be shared at www.johnmoakey.com.
