Ernest Lee Caldwell, 89, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018.
Mr. Caldwell was born on Saturday, September 15, 1928 in Dublin, Va. He was a retired foreman with VDOT after 34 years of service, and was an avid gardener throughout his life.
Preceding him in death was his mother, Reba Caldwell Akers; step-father, John Earl Akers; loving wife of 54 years, Mary Stephens Caldwell; half-brother, Carl Akers; and half-sister, Mary Sue McDaniels.
His surviving family includes his children, Patricia Gorig, Brenda Pritt and husband, Elmer, Roger Caldwell, Lois Rose, and Connie Majkowski; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Ronald Akers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018, in the funeral homes chapel with Rev. Ben Lockhart officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.
