Elsie Gage Maness Smythe, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015. She was born on July 18, 1915 and would have celebrated her 100th birthday this Saturday. Affectionately known by all of her family as Nana, she was the daughter of the late John Alexander Maness and Maude McClain Maness of Roanoke. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, M.A. Pete Smythe, Jr., three sisters, Marjorie Jennings, Beverly Gilbert and Virginia Reynolds, and her son-in-law, Richard Stone Whitney, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Lynne (Jeff) Lorch of Lexington, KY, and Carole Whitney of Botetourt County. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Kari Whitney and Erin Beckner of Roanoke, Allyson Joyce of Botetourt County, Katelyn Delaney of Louisville, KY; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Elsie was a member of the Star City Bridge Club, Thursday Morning Music Club, the Episcopal Womens Association, and was a devoted member of the Christ Episcopal Church Alter Guild for many decades. She enjoyed playing the piano and bridge and had many devoted friends throughout the years. The family would like to thank the staff of Our Lady of the Valley Nursing Home for their excellent and compassionate care. Services will be announced by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.
