Elizabeth Betty Reamey Sherrard, 101, of Roanoke County and formerly of Salem, passed away quietly at home on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Her chief purpose and joy in life was helping others. A certified nursing assistant, she worked successively for Dr. Esther Brown and then Dr. Fred Cruser. In retirement she led an active life with a wide circle of family and friends. She volunteered at the Salem Museum and Historical Society and was an active member of Salem Presbyterian Church since her marriage in 1939. Preceding her in death was her husband, Sidney S. Sherrard; father, Walter R. Reamey and Ruby Numsen Myers Reamey; and brother, John R. Reamey. Her surviving family includes a son, McCluer Sherrard and wife, Mary Alice; daughter, Martha S. Rine; grandchildren, Tim Rine and wife, Judy, Rebecca Rine Ferguson and husband, Keith, Jonathan Sherrard and wife, Catherine, and Jarrod Sherrard; and great-grandchildren, Liam Ferguson and Caitlin Ferguson. The family wishes to offer special thanks to Betty Montgomery, who was a devoted and loving caretaker, and a true angel in Mrs. Sherrards life.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. A memorial service will then follow at Elm Park Estates in Roanoke at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. William Robinson of Salem Presbyterian Church will officiate at both. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Museum and Historical Society at 801 East Main Street in Salem, VA 24153 or to Salem Presbyterian Church at 41 East Main Street in Salem, VA 24153.
