Elaine Bayne Gregory

Martha Elaine Bayne Gregory passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, to be with her Lord Jesus. Elaine was born in Bedford, Va., but was a lifelong Salem resident, a loving wife, a proud mom, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved reading, discussing politics, and her family. She will be remembered by those who knew her as a selfless model of a godly woman endowed with the gift of hospitality. She was preceded in death by her father, James Thomas Bayne Sr.; her mother, Margaret Mauk Bayne; and her older brothers, James T. Bayne Jr. and Clyde Eugene Bayne. She is survived by her husband, Charles Dorton Gregory, Jr; her children, Michael Gregory (Libby), Margaret Whitt (Gary), Mark Gregory, Matthew Gregory (Breckell), and Mary Gregory (Tony); and her grandchildren, Forest Gregory, Hannah Claros, Morgan Gregory, Marissa Abshire, Marlie Gregory, and Emma Gregory. Elaine is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Belen, Oakley, and Moises; as well as her sister, Betty Geraldine Hedge. A period of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, also in the chapel, with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
