Efton Bennett Meredith, 97, of Salem, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 the way he lived his life, with dignity. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 74 years, Marie Goe Meredith; their children, Martha Meredith Todd and her husband Allen, Edward Robert Meredith, Sr. and his wife Linda, Susan Meredith Wolfe and her husband James, and Leslie Meredith Bittner and her husband David; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin P. and Martha Bennett Meredith, and by his sister, Lela Spalding.
Efton was born on October 4, 1917 in Osborn, Kansas. At age seven his family moved to Caldwell County, Missouri to the family farm. On September 28, 1940 he married Marie Elizabeth Goe. He always said he knew he would marry her the first time he saw her riding her bicycle around the Kingston Missouri Courthouse. In 1941, Efton and Marie moved to Baltimore, MD where they lived and raised their family for over 60 years. They were active member of the Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church. Efton worked as an engineer for the B&O Railroad, was a special representative for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and became a Federal Mediator, prior to retiring at the age of 72.
He is remembered for being a kind, generous and thoughtful person who enjoyed a good joke and always made those around him know that they were loved and appreciated.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM, Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home with Chaplain Dave Vanderpool officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Rd.
