Edna Elizabeth Lawson Hinton of Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011. She was born April 25, 1932 in Salem, Va. to the late James R. Lawson and Ada Pansie Lawrence Lawson Texter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarke Stokes Hinton, Sr., son, Clarke Stokes Hinton, Jr., brother, James Roger Lawson; brother-in-law, Robert Foley and son-in-law, James Douglas Bennett. She is survived by daughter Karen L. Bennett of Kings Mountain, NC, two grand-dogs-Gracie & Lillie Bennett-(miniature schnauzers), sisters, Rebecca Ann Foley, of Hardy, Va & Helen and brother in-law, Luther Okes of Lynchburg, Va. Step-son, James A. Hinton of Vinton, Va., Step-grandchildren William Hinton & Lori Pilcher. Several nieces, nephews & cousins. Also left to cherish her memory at Salem Health & Rehab. are Unit 2 staff, many friends and the residents, whom she fondly referred to as her residents. Mrs. Hinton spent much of her adult life in the Washington, DC & Maryland area where she was a wife, working mother & lovingly raised her children. One of her greatest joys was helping others which was demonstrated when she joined the Red Cross as a Grey Lady and worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC After the death of her husband Clarke, she moved to Burlington, West Virginia where she worked at Burlington United Methodist Family Services. She loved the teens at Craig House and raising money for them. Mrs. Hinton has resided at Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center for 10 years and has served as President of the Resident Council for the past seven yrs. A Celebration of Life will be held at Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center, 1945 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, Va. at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 21, 2010 in the Activities room. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Salem. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Resident Council of Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center for a piano or the charity of the donors choice. The family wishes to thank the staff at Salem Health & Rehab for all of the love, care & laughter given to Edna during the past 10 years.
