After a lengthy battle with diabetes, Edna Lucille Brogan Hancock, 92, of Salem, left her earthly life on Sunday, June 21, 2015, to join her husband, John Max Hancock, Sr. Lucille was born on July 21, 1922, to the late Harry and Gay Sigmon Brogan. Lucille, a homemaker, and her husband raised their six children in Craig County where Mr. Hancock was Assistant Manager of the Craig/Botetourt Electric Cooperative. When Mr. Hancock became Head Engineer of Salem, Lucille and her husband moved to Salem where they spent their retirement years. Due to declining health, Lucille spent the last several years at Richfield Nursing Home. She was a member of Salem Methodist Church and a past Matron of the Eastern Star, New Castle, Virginia Chapter. In addition to her parents and husband, Lucille was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anne Hancock. She is survived by a son, John Max Hancock, Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Vinton; daughters, Peggy H. Carter and husband, Bill, of Avon, Ind., Maxine H. Hall of Salem, Diane Hancock of Salem, and Jane Hancock of Salem; grandchildren, John R. Hancock of Harrisonburg, Tiffany H. McCormack and husband, Rusty, of Vinton, Caroline H. Williams and husband, Josh, of Vinton, Kristi C. Scherler and husband, Rob, of Akron, Ohio, Julie C. Compton and husband, John, of Brownsburg, Ind., Lewis Grubbs and wife, Cindy, of Cathleen, Ga., and Joseph Grubbs of Salem; great-grandchildren, Brian McCormack, Ellie McCormack, Jack Williams, Piper Williams, Will Scherler, Morgan Scherler, Rylan Compton, Regan Compton, Lance Grubbs, Joseph Grubbs, and Christopher Grubbs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A graveside will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke with Chaplain Dave Vanderpool officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
