Edith Marie Martin Akers 81, of Roanoke, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday August 28, 2013 Born to the late Edward and Effie Martin, along with her parents she will be welcomed to heaven by her sisters Myrtle Lester and Gladys Thomas. Edith fought long and hard against kidney disease and became affectionately known as a tough old bird, by her side each step of the way was her husband of over 50 years, Boyd J. Akers, as a true Marine Simper Fi (always faithful), he saw to her every need. Edith was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Left behind to cherish her memories are her daughter, Misty Linda Akers; a son, David B. Akers and fiance, Wanda Cody; grandchildren, Destyni Akers, Jessi Dodson, Amber Saunders, James Belcher, Angela Childress, Jason Boyd, Randall Boyd, Krista Lofton, Sierra Rushbrooke, Alayna Rushbrooke, and Jacob Tolley; ten great grandchildren; special niece, Nancy Eden and nephew, Terry Thomas, along with a host of other family members and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 pm until 9 pm on Friday August 30, 2013 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, a funeral service to honor the life of Edith Marie Akers will take place on Saturday August 31, 2013 at 1 pm in the funeral home chapel, interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Roanoke.
