Eddie William Taylor, 89, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. He was born in Bedford County, a son of the late William R. Taylor and Gracie St. Clair Taylor and had been a Roanoke Valley resident for most of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Betty H. Taylor, who died March 16, 2012. He was employed as a truck driver with the Kroger Company for over 36 years. Never missing a day of work or having any accidents earned him the nick name of Steady Eddie. He also received many accommodations over the years as a courteous driver and in assisting troubled motorists along his routes. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing and was a gun enthusiast and collector. He is survived by two sons, Rex W. Taylor and his wife Julie, and Kyle E. Taylor; a brother, Frank Taylor; two granddaughters, Sarah and Megan Taylor; a grandson, Evan Taylor; a niece Vicky Mason, her husband Chuck and their children, and a nephew, Doug Taylor, his wife Maxine and their children. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Salem. The Rev. Hilton Jeffreys will officiate. Burial will be at 1PM, Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Bedford. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 6 to 8PM and for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Eddies honor to Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 S. Colorado St. Salem, VA 24153.
