Dossie Plybon Martin, 91, of Roanoke, passed away on January 5, 2013 at Carrington Place in Daleville, which had been her home for the past 3 years. Born on May 20, 1921, she was the youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Cora Plybon of Bassett, VA. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, William Maston Martin; cherished daughter, Dottie Martin Morris; and eleven brothers and sisters.
Dossie loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress, who sewed everything from her daughters wedding dress to Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. She retired from Heironimus as Fabric Buyer. Dossie loved nature and saw beauty in every living thing. She loved gardening and held every office in the Virginia Garden Club Association. She loved birds and butterflies, as well as creatures not quite as beautiful because she understood their beauty in nature. Dossie was a dedicated Christian and long time member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church.
Surviving family members include her son, Joseph Martin and wife, Brenda; son-in-law, Thayer M. Morris, Jr.; grandchildren, Thayer (Chip) Morris III and wife, Shaila, Robin Hardin and husband, David, Jennifer Richardson and husband, Todd, Melissa May and husband David, Christina Gorth and husband, Matthew, and Andrew Martin and wife, Lynsey; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends too numerous to name.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 7, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the funeral homes chapel with The Rev. C. Lawrence Dodson officiating. Dossies final resting place will be Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
