Dorothy Douglas Deacon Stevens, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Born on July 28, 1919, in Lexington, Va. to the late Elmer Hanger and Rachael Beal Deacon, Dottie spent her early years in Gary, WVa., then moved to Catonsville, Md. where she attended Catonsville High School. Upon graduation she enrolled at Longwood College, where her social life flourished, especially when attending weekends in Annapolis at the U.S. Naval Academy. Oh, how she loved June Week! Dottie also enjoyed Notre Dame Football, Sees Candy, and dancing at Fluvanna Lake.
After living in Memphis and Baltimore, Dottie settled in Salem and into what would become her longest and favorite place of employment, North Cross School. Dottie was the receptionist at North Cross when it was located in Salem. She often recounted stories from those early days: keeping the children's lunch money in a cigar box; the Halloween Parade down Main Street; and May Pole dances.
After North Cross moved to Roanoke County, Dottie held various positions spanning more than 30 plus years. Her favorite was working with children in the kindergarten classes. Being in the company of a baby or young child always made her smile.
Truly thoughtful and generous, Dottie always put others first whether it was a birthday remembrance, a simple bit of cheer left at your door, or a dollar slipped to a friend's grandchild. Doing for others and seeing them happy was Dotties life motivation.
Family from Baltimore, Scottsville, and Richmond along with those in the immediate area were always important to her, especially grandson Peter, who dearly loved his Mimi. Those left to remember Dottie are her daughter, Anne Lee (Peter A. Ostaseski); grandson, Peter A. Ostaseski, Jr.; sister, Nancy Lee Andrews (William L. Jr.); sister-in-law, Margaret P. Brinkman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Salem Presbyterian Church in Salem. The Rev. Will Robinson will officiate. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to North Cross School at 4254 Colonial Avenue in Roanoke, VA 24018 or Salem Presbyterian Church at P.O. Box 536 in Salem, VA 24153.
