Doris Jones West, lovingly known as "Nanny," of Elliston, Va., went home to be with the Lord and her children on Saturday, December 13, 2025. She was 93 years old.
Doris was born in Max Meadows, Va., to the late Corbett William and Rosa Ratliff Jones on Monday, March 7, 1932. Doris loved her family deeply. Her grandchildren describe their Nanny as the strongest woman they have ever known--- resilient, tough, independent, loving, and deeply caring toward her family, neighbors, the sick, and any animal that came to her porch. She was the best cook in Southwest Virginia, and she worked until her mid-eighties. Doris was a dedicated gardener until age 93. Her faith in God was steadfast, and she had the complete assurance that her permanent address was Heaven. Doris's faith allowed her to weather any storm that came into her path.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her children, Linda Leary, Thomas "Tommy" Alley, Ricky Alley, Greg Alley, Jerry West, and Joette Davis.
Left to cherish Doris's memory are her son-in-law, Henry Leary (Linda); daughter-in-law, Joan Alley (Tommy); grandchildren, Pamela "Pam" Hawes (Chris), Paula Cooper (David), Heather Love (Casey), Thomas "Corey" Alley (Betsy), Adam Alley, Brandon Alley (Jessie), Abigail Alley, and Brian Davis, Jr; and great-grandchildren, Trevor Battoia, Hunter Cole, Anayah Moore, Hannah Moore, Hailey Love, Maddison Love, Mason Love, Noel Alley, Eden Alley, Landen Alley, Blake Alley, Easton Alley, Tye Alley, Josie Alley, Anastacia Davis, and Laylah Davis.
A service to honor Doris's life will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Monday, December 22, 2025, at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, with Pastor Thomas "Corey" Alley officiating. Friends are welcome for a period of visitation from 11:00 a.m., until the hour of the service. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, 5555 Lee Highway, Dublin, Va.
Words are inadequate to express the family's gratitude for neighbors, Margaret Fitzwater, Richard Dalton, and Tony Nelson for their loving and watchful care over Nanny. They would also like to thank niece, Cindy Taylor, for going above and beyond to make Nanny happy, and for her devotion and attentiveness toward her aunt Doris during the past several months. The family expresses their sincerest love and thanks to each one of you.
