Doris Marie Mabes

Doris Turner Mabes, 85, of Salem, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 10, 2018, while being surrounded by her family. Born on Wednesday, May 4, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Virginia B. and Marsden B. Turner. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Kolmer, Warren, and Woodrow; and a sister, Edna. Doris was an active member of Salem Baptist Church most of her life. She worked with the youth and sang in the choir. Her early exposure to church led her to always believe in her God. She was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School. After high school, she worked with the VA Department of Transportation as a trainee in the draft and design department gaining the title of Highway Design Engineer. She was instrumental and proud of her work in the design of the last stages of I-81 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Doris was a cancer survivor and served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society in Roanoke. She was an avid golfer and dedicated to organizing the local ladies golf tournament sponsored by the Cancer Society. In addition to a full life, she was also an avid bridge player and a member of Hidden Valley Country Club and The Waterfront Country Club. Her surviving family includes her loving husband of 64 years, Ralph D. Mabes; son, Stephen L. Mabes; daughter, Brenda Mabes Williams; granddaughter, Stephanie L. Mabes; grandson, Michael P. Williams; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Draper and Dominick Draper; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family extends a special thank you to both Salem Terrace Memory Care and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their loving care of Doris. A period of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in the funeral homes chapel with Pastor Everett Kier officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park with Associate Pastor Tom Clark officiating. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in memory of Doris may be made to Salem Baptist Church located at 103 North Broad Street in Salem, Va. 24153.
