Diane Wing

March 10, 1957 — December 31, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Diane Bute Wing, who went home to be with the Lord on December 31st, 2025. Diane passed peacefully at home, with her children by her side.

Diane was born to the late Gordon Taylor Bute and Velzora Ellen Hagelin Bute on March 10th, 1957 in Illinois, and later made her home in the Roanoke Valley. She graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1975 and went on to study at James Madison University, where she received her Bachelors degree in 1979.

After working for several businesses in the Roanoke Valley, Diane found her ultimate passion at Roanoke College as the coordinator of the campus center and student activities. The staff and students adored Diane and her vibrant and tender spirit; for 20+ years she was known as the campus "mom." For her immense dedication and care in her service to the Roanoke College community, Diane was recognized as the 2011-2012 Outstanding Staff Member and also presented with the Service to All Roanoke (STAR) award in 2023.

Outside of work, Diane loved tending to her beautiful plants, playing with her mischievous cats and being outside in nature. She loved to read, and took a book wherever she went. She loved traveling, particularly taking annual beach trips and spending weekends at Smith Mountain Lake in the cabin her father built.

Diane shared her love for life and adventure with her close-knit circles: the S.M.U.T.S. (that's "Salem Mothers Under Tremendous Stress" to the rest of us) and her community at West Salem Baptist Church, where she was an involved and dedicated member.

Diane was a devoted mom, Mimi, aunt, and sister to those whom she cherished deeply. There was nothing she loved more than snuggling and reading with her grandsons, Ethan and Caleb. Diane leaves behind many treasured memories, and her family will miss her greatly.

In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Terry Woods.

Diane is survived by her son, Jonathan Wing (Jen) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Vivian Wing of Salem, VA; sister, Linda Woods of Salem, VA; grandchildren, Ethan and Caleb Wing of Charlotte, NC; and nephews, Chris Davis (Debbie), Kevin Davis, and Brian Davis (Jennifer).

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date.
