Dennis Alan Carter

Dennis Alan (Red) Carter, 86, of Salem, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. Red was born in Roanoke on Saturday, October 10, 1931. He served for 4 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. As a graduate of the Virginia Tech School of Engineering, he retired from a supervisory position at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 30 years of service. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mary Newnam Anderson and William Alvin Carter; brother, Jack Carter; brother-in-law, Edward Crowder; and a nephew, Larry Crowder. His surviving family includes his wife, Ann Thomason Carter; sister, Jean Crowder; sister-in-law, Diana Thomason; nephews, Thomas Crowder and wife, Connie, and Mark Crowder and wife, Mary; niece, Mary Painter and husband, Johnnie; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Chewy. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, in the funeral homes chapel with Rev. Greg Hetherington officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
