Deliah Dee Light, 70, of Salem, quietly passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014.
She was born in Salem, a daughter of the late George D. Abernathy and Geneva Buchanan Abernathy and had been a Salem resident all of her life. Dee retired from the Salem City School District after dedicating over thirty years of her life to the education of young minds. She was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church where she was active in the Womens Church Circle, and enjoyed the fellowship of her quilting group and playing canasta. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jerry L. Light, who died in 2007, and a son, David Light who passed in 2000.
She is survived by two sons, Matthew E. Light and his wife Jenny, and Joel A. Light and his wife Tina; two grandchildren, Travis Light and Emma Light; a great-granddaughter, Caroline Light, and her group, The Broad Street Broads.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Salem Baptist Church. The Rev. Everett Kier will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Monday, June 2, 2014 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home.
