Deane T. Abbott Deane Trerice Abbott, 83, of Salem, died peacefully on Monday, September 26, 2011. He was born September 19, 1928 in Southeast Roanoke, the son of the late Arthur C. Abbott of Craig County and Pearl M. Trerice of Nova Scotia. Deanes 83 years of life were well spent; he graduated from Jefferson High School and attended Roanoke College and UVA. A US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was stationed in Greenland, spending a lot of his time on skis. He was employed as a Roadway Design Engineer with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed bowling and billiards, spent time as a drag racer, enjoyed deep sea fishing at Cape Hatteras with his friends, and traveling to the Indianapolis 500 several times. An avid reader, he also enjoyed classical music, but his true love was for birds and animals, both woodland and domestic. He especially enjoyed cats and leaves behind two much loved pets, Sue and Black Cat. Hiking, caving and canoeing were also on his list of fun things to do. He is survived by his sister, Rose Hussey of Roanoke; nephew Eric Hussey and his wife Susan of North Bend, WA; a niece Heather Blassberg and her husband Richard of Danbury, CT; grand-nieces, Robin Blassberg, Heather Renee Hussey, Shayna and Malina Mena; grand-nephews Spencer and Griffin Blassberg as well as many cousin and friends, including special friends, Billy Marshall, Danny and Elaine Kyle, Tim and Dana Schirm,David Poage and Garland Perry.
