David C. Newman, 58, of Salem, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 30, 2014. He was born in Roanoke, the son of Willie C. Newman and the late Nancy Miller Newman and had been an area resident all of his life. He worked in the construction field for several years and was employed at Hollins University for over 15 years prior to retiring. David was a member of Glenvar Baptist Church, where he served as an AWANA Director, Youth Leader and Trustee. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, helping others and spending time with his family. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Seth Hunter Newman, and a brother, Timmy Newman. Along with his father, he is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Barbara Hunter Newman; two sons, Kristopher David Newman and Kyle Thomas Beach; a brother, Henry Newman and his wife Carol; two sisters, Donna Weimer and her husband Brad, and Joanne Starkloff and her husband Howard; a sister-in-law, Trina Pruitt, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Pastor Matt King will officiate. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Thursday (this evening) at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Glenvar Baptist Church, 4804 Stanley Farm Rd. Salem, VA 24153.
