David Josh McCray, 65, of Salem, died Friday, July 3, 2015 at Friendship Manor following a courageous bout with cancer.
He was born on October 30, 1949 in Roanoke to the late Preston and Cleo Woodson McCray. David attended Andrew Lewis High School in Salem where he lettered in sports and helped win the Virginia State Championship in Basketball in 1968. He then continued his education at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. He enjoyed basketball and softball, saving animals and playing music with his brother. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Barry McCray.
He is survived by a sister, Vicki (Ralph) Robinson; two brothers, William (Lolly) McCray, and Robert (Diane) McCray, all of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends too numerous to mention here.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM, Thursday, July 9, 2015 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Pastor Tim Gearheart will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1PM at the funeral home.
