Daniel Francis Scooter Wheeling, 72, of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, after bravely and patiently battling Primary Progressive Aphasia and Parkinsons Disease. He was born to Fred and Vera Wheeling on Monday, June 17, 1946. As a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School and Guilford College, Scooter returned to his hometown to teach at Salem Intermediate School, then West Salem Elementary School. While teaching, Scooter also coached football and track at Salem Intermediate School, Andrew Lewis High School, and Salem High School. He was an avid reader, a painter of Santas, a teller of jokes, a beach music lover, and an extraordinary dancer. Choosing not to sweat the small stuff, Scooter led with a beautiful, genuine smile and contagious laugh. In addition to his parents, Scooter is preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pat and Lucille Osborne; sister, Dona Wheeling Smith; brother, Dennis Gussie Wheeling; sister-in-law, Frances Yarboro; brothers-in-law, Tommy Yarboro and Alvin Wells.
Cherishing the memory of a life well-lived are his wife Jean; his daughter, Lauren Wheeling Waller and husband, Chad; granddaughter, Wren Elizabeth Waller; sister, Debbie Wheeling; brother, Duane Wheeling and wife, Katie; sisters-in-law, Linda Wheeling and Ann Wells; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Murphy and Janice Osborne; and a treasure of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Scooters life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, 125 W. Main St., Salem, Va. 24153.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, 305 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, Va. on Sunday, December 2, 2018.
