Clovis Leo Akers, 90, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 19, 2015. He was a U.S. Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. For 35 years, he worked as an electrician and brakeman with Norfolk-Southern Railroad. Clovis faithfully attended Beacon Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles Emory and Bessie Akers; and siblings, Douglas Akers, Gordon Akers, Derwood Akers, Boyd Akers, and Eloise Overstreet. His surviving family includes his wife of 63 years, Alvin Mary Akers; daughter, Brenda Firebaugh; stepsons, Donald and Michael Haynes; grandchildren, Ryan, Michelle, Miranda, Misty, Angie, and Michael; several great-grandchildren and nephews; and sister-in-law, Clara Akers. The family expresses sincere thanks to special friends and caregivers, Kerman and Susan Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be gifted to Beacon Baptist Church at 307 North Bruffey Street in Salem, VA 24153. A period of visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will then take place on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the funeral homes chapel with Pastor Don Woodard officiating.
