Charles Lowell Maxey, age 75, of Salem, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011. He was born at his familys home in Roanoke County on October 26, 1935. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Yvonne (Vonnie) Maxey; two daughters, Deanna (DeeDee) Maxey Jones and husband, JJ, and Dana Maxey Hartman; four grandchildren, Zachary, Kasie, Tristen Cregger, and Kelly Fisher; and beloved dog, Millie Mae (Prissy Four Legs). He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Maxey Webb; nieces, Winona Blevins and Kimberly Maxey; and nephews, Michael Webb and Keith Maxey. He was predeceased by his parents, Dewey Milton Maxey and Beatrice Williams Maxey; and a brother, Allen Wesley Maxey. He proudly served in the United States Army. In his younger years, he raced stock cars in Callaway, Virginia. Charles owned a service station on Williamson Road, worked on a tug boat in Virginia Beach for many years, and for the last 22 years was a devoted employee of Fisher (Shepherds) Auto Parts driving a delivery truck. He planned to retire on May 1. He enjoyed watching Washington Redskins football and was an avid NASCAR fan with his favorite driver being Jimmie Johnson. A service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 6 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. Burial will be private at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
