Charles Dorton "Charlie" Gregory Jr.

Charles (Charlie) Dorton Gregory Jr. passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, to be with his Lord Jesus. Charlie was born in Roanoke, Va. on January 29, 1943. A legend at Jefferson High School, Charlie loved playing football there and in college, as well as watching it with his sons when he was older. He was a diligent employee for many years at several companies and had an incredible work ethic. In retirement, he became an avid gardener capable of growing huge tomatoes and peppers. He will be remembered for these things, but also for being a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Dorton Gregory Sr.; his mother, Ann Eulalah Underwood Gregory, his sister, Betty Gregory Wills and his loyal wife of 62 years, Martha Elaine Bayne Gregory. He is survived by his children, Michael Gregory (Libby), Margaret Whitt (Gary), Mark Gregory, Matthew Gregory (Breckell), and Mary Gregory (Tony); his grandchildren, Forrest Gregory, Hannah Claros (Edwin), Morgan Gregory, Marissa Abshire (David), Marlie Gregory, and Emma Gregory; his great-grandchildren Belen, Oakley and Moises. He is also survived by his nephews Hugo Scott Wills (Mary) and C. Jason Wills. SPECIAL FRIENDS: Our thanks to Dads special friends Stacey Royall, Brian and Laura Lee Whitten, and Kristin Gibbs. A visitation will be held at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem on Sunday, October 1st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held there on Monday, October 2nd at 11:00 AM with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Sherwood Memorial Park.
