Catherine Smith Thurston

Catherine Smith Thurston, 95, of Salem, formerly of Waynesboro, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 28, 2014. She was the daughter of David and Emma Smith and wife of the late Paul Grant Thurston of Waynesboro. She lived most of her life in the Waynesboro area, however, she moved to Salem 22 years ago in order to be with her family, especially her beloved great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Judy Thurston Stanley and husband, H.L. of Salem; her grandchildren: Sharon Stanley Hill and husband, Tom; Susan Stanley Gardner and husband, Mike; Sherill Stanley Steffan and husband Steve; and Scott Allen Stanley and wife, Christi all of the Salem/Roanoke area. In addition, she is survived by her great-grandchildren: Warren, Ashley, and Regan Gardner; Matthew and Cady Hill; Kasey Gregory, Emily, Scott, and Haley Steffan; Ryan and Mason Stanley. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at John M. Oakey & Son in Salem, VA. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Augusta Memorial Park in Fishersville, Virginia, with Rev. Dee Flory officiating. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 5:00 pm at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Salem.
