Carolyn Taylor Gwin, 65, of Salem and formerly of Catawba, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 7, 2012. She was a faithful member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church and served as Secretary of the UMW. She was employed with VDOT and worked there for over 30 years. She was very loyal to her family and enjoyed sharing monthly breakfasts with her brothers and sisters. Preceding her in death were her parents, Paris and Pearl Taylor; brothers, Harold Taylor, Fred Taylor, and Melvin Taylor; and sister, Sarah (Jo) Clark. Her surviving family includes her son, Jerry Johnson; brother, Willis Taylor and wife, Loraine; sisters, Lola Rowe and husband, Kenny, Peggy Halsey, and special sister Sandra Abbott; sisters-in-law, Sue Taylor and JoAnn Taylor; special cousin, Linda Taylor; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. A special thanks on behalf of the family goes out to Dr. Kochenderfer, the Blue Ridge Cancer Care Center, and the entire 6 west staff at Lewis-Gale Medical Center for their kind and loving care. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012 at 2 p.m., also in the funeral homes chapel with Pastor Ben Lockhart and Rev. Loraine Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Halls Cemetery in Catawba. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carolyns name may be made to either Locust Grove United Methodist Church at 3415 Locust Grove Lane in Salem, VA 24153 or to the American Cancer Society at 2840 Electric Road #106 in Roanoke, VA 24018.
