Carl Arthur Murchison

Carl Arthur Murchison, age 89, of Salem, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Carl was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the beloved son of the late Arthur William and Eleanor Olson Murchison. At the young age of 17, Carl answered the call to serve his country and entered the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable service in the military, he dedicated his career to his community, working faithfully as a U.S. postal carrier in Salem, Virginia.

In 1977, Carl met his lifelong friend, Betty Jane Winstead, who preceded him in death, and her son, Tony Winstead. Carl proudly shared his whole heart with them and completely embraced Tony's children, Kayla Ann Torre, Hannah Grace Winstead, and Madison Mae Winstead, as his own beloved grandchildren. He is further survived by his son-in-law, Joshua Thomas Torre; great-grandson, Joel Torre; stepsister, Barbara Jarvis; and three nephews.

Carl will be remembered most for his completely selfless love. He consistently put the needs of his family above his own, giving everything he had to ensure they felt supported and cherished. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion, and he will be deeply missed by the family he chose and loved so beautifully.

Special appreciation is extended to the staff of the Good Samaritan Hospice House for their incredible staff and excellent quality of care.

A private interment ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Sherwood Memorial Park.
